State Parks co-hosts Washington Coast Cleanup on April 19, 2025

Shoreline, WALocal News

Scheduled for April 19, 2025, the Washington Coast Cleanup is a collaborative effort between the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission and the Washington Clean Coast Alliance to preserve the state's coastline. Volunteers will gather at ten state parks, including Cape Disappointment and Fort Worden, to participate in this vital cleanup effort. Last year, the event saw 2,339 volunteers remove an astonishing 159,431 pounds of marine debris, equivalent to the weight of approximately 13 adult orca whales. Participants will check in at various locations and should prepare for variable weather, wearing sturdy footwear and bringing a packed lunch. Supplies for debris collection will be provided, and volunteers are encouraged to bring reusable gloves.

The event highlights the ongoing need for community involvement in environmental preservation, as evidenced by partnerships with organizations like Washington CoastSavers and Surfrider Foundation. The requirement of a Discover Pass for vehicle access emphasizes the importance of supporting state-managed lands. This annual event not only addresses critical environmental issues but also fosters a sense of community and stewardship among participants.
