School board to review proposed layoffs for the next school year at board meeting Tuesday

Shoreline, WALocal News

The Shoreline school district is grappling with a substantial budget deficit estimated at $6. 5 million for the upcoming 2025-26 school year, which has led to a proposed discussion of layoffs during the school board meeting. To date, the district has already implemented a hiring freeze and laid off 44 staff members, including vital roles such as library technicians and custodians. With a staggering 87% of the budget allocated to staff compensation, further staff reductions appear inevitable. The school board will review a draft Reduced Educational Program (REP), a legally mandated step to facilitate workforce reductions.

Currently, the draft plan suggests the elimination of 5. 5 positions, which is projected to save approximately $1. 5 million; however, to reach the targeted $6. 5 million in savings, additional layoffs may be required. Superintendent Dr.

Susana Reyes has highlighted the district's commitment to addressing these budgetary challenges with care and compassion, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with labor partners. The situation reflects broader trends in education funding and the challenges many districts face in maintaining fiscal stability. As the district navigates these difficult decisions, the impact on staff and educational quality remains a critical concern for the community.
