Free e-bikes for some Briarcrest and Ridgecrest residents
Shoreline residents in selected neighborhoods of south Briarcrest and Ridgecrest are invited to apply for free e-bikes, a move aimed at enhancing mobility and reducing air pollution. Eligibility requires residents to live within defined geographic boundaries, which can be checked via a map on the city's website. This initiative targets communities identified as overburdened due to high pollution levels and socio-economic injustices. The program not only provides e-bikes but also includes essential safety gear and training, prioritizing low-income residents earning below 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). The Cascade Bicycle Club will manage the distribution of bikes and gear while offering free bike training classes to participants.
A contract worth $615,774, approved by the city council, is funded through a Department of Ecology grant linked to the Climate Commitment Act, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Washington. This grant recently overcame an initiative challenge, ensuring continued support for climate-focused programs. The initiative represents a significant local effort to promote sustainable transportation solutions in response to environmental and social challenges.
