Harborview Prepares for Fireworks-Related Injuries Ahead of Fourth of July

Shoreline, WALocal News

With the Fourth of July festivities on the horizon, Harborview Medical Center is bracing for an expected surge in fireworks-related injuries, having treated an average of 65 patients in previous years. Dr. Steve Mitchell, the medical director, identifies two primary injury patterns: facial and eye injuries, along with hand injuries. Tragically, many of these cases involve young children who are often innocent bystanders at family gatherings where fireworks are used. Dr.

Mitchell emphasizes that these incidents often occur when a firework is set off by someone else, highlighting the need for increased caution. Prevention strategies are critical, and the medical team advocates for public education regarding the risks associated with fireworks. By fostering community awareness, Harborview aims to mitigate the number of injuries this holiday. The hospital encourages families to consider safer alternatives to fireworks to protect their loved ones. Ultimately, a collaborative effort can significantly reduce the likelihood of tragic accidents during Independence Day celebrations.
