Report In 2024, Gun violence in King County decreased for the first time since 2018

Shoreline, WALocal News

A new report from the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office indicates that gun violence is trending downward in King County for the first time since 2018, with both fatal and non-fatal shooting victims decreasing year over year. This trend reflects a potential alignment with decreasing gun violence rates observed nationally over the last few years. Despite these encouraging signs, the report reveals alarming increases in youth gun violence, with the number of youth shooting victims doubling since 2019. Young individuals aged 0-17 now represent 15% of total shooting victims, highlighting a critical area of concern. King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion expressed cautious optimism about the data while stressing the need for ongoing efforts to protect the community.

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the significance of collaborative action in reducing gun violence and holding gun traffickers accountable. The report also notes that people of color are disproportionately affected by gun violence, a trend that persists despite the overall decline. The data serves as a reminder that while progress is being made, significant work remains to ensure the safety of all residents in King County.
