Shoreline Community College No cuts to parent education preschool program

Shoreline, WALocal News

Shoreline Community College's beloved co-op preschool and parent education programs, which have served the community for 50 years, faced a shocking 50% budget cut, raising concerns among parents. In response, College President Jack Kahn shared insights into the college's financial landscape, highlighting Washington state's $12 billion budget shortfall affecting educational institutions. Following a comprehensive review, Kahn announced that the program would continue with operational adjustments, including a planned increase in the course tuition waiver fee to $31 per credit for the 2025-26 academic year. The collaborative efforts of Dean Shanon Ehmke-Reedy and program directors were crucial in formulating a plan for financial sustainability. Kahn expressed gratitude to parents for their commitment and advocacy, which played a significant role in preserving the program.

While the immediate future looks promising, he cautioned that ongoing state budget cuts could necessitate re-evaluating all programs. The college remains dedicated to providing quality educational resources despite financial challenges. This situation underscores the importance of community support and proactive planning in the face of fiscal difficulties.
