Employment Security assists federal workers with unemployment claims, job searches amid rise in layoffs

Shoreline, WALocal News

In response to rising federal government layoffs, Washington's Employment Security Department is actively assisting affected employees with unemployment claims and job searches. Recent data reveals a significant increase in claims, with 650 federal employees filing in 2025 compared to 479 at the same time last year. Governor Bob Ferguson has assured that the administration stands ready to support all impacted workers, emphasizing the importance of state assistance during these trying times. Employment Security Commissioner Cami Feek echoed this commitment, stating that the department is prepared to help federal employees transition to new job opportunities. Eligibility for unemployment benefits is contingent upon residency and the location of the employee's official duty station.

The state boasts around 76,000 federal employees, with the highest concentrations in Kitsap, King, and Pierce counties. Federal employees can also access specialized services at over 30 WorkSource offices, which offer job listings, resume assistance, and training opportunities.
