Master Gardeners help train Shorewood special needs students
Shorewood High School's new training program for special needs students integrates gardening with essential life skills. Developed by King County Master Gardeners and teacher Carlotta Han, the program focuses on hands-on activities like planting and composting. Over two semesters, students have engaged in projects that also foster social and emotional growth, emphasizing teamwork and self-esteem. Recently, students created Halloween-themed pots and planted bulbs, celebrating their work with pumpkin pie. The program was recognized at the 2025 King County Master Gardener Recognition Event, showcasing its community impact.
This initiative not only provides practical skills but also promotes inclusivity for students with diverse needs. The collaboration highlights the importance of community involvement in educational programs. Such efforts contribute to building a supportive environment for students to thrive.
