Tree Code update launches with meeting October 21, 2025

Shoreline, WALocal News

Shoreline City has initiated the Tree Code Update 2025-2026, with a goal to raise tree canopy coverage from 37% to 40% by 2050. The first meeting of the Community Advisory Group will occur on October 21, 2025, at City Hall, open to the public for observation. Tree advocates are critical of the 3% increase planned over 25 years, especially given that the canopy rose from 30% in 1992 to 37% in 2017. They emphasize the long-term nature of tree growth and the time required for newly planted trees to positively impact the canopy. The tree code aims to protect and enhance this coverage for the benefit of residents now and in the future.

The City staff presented these goals to the Shoreline City Council, underlining the importance of maintaining the urban forest. With the canopy assessment using 2021 data, advocates are pushing for more ambitious targets. Free parking is available in the garage behind City Hall for attendees.
