Washington State Department of Health secures USDA funding to maintain WIC benefits through October

Shoreline, WALocal News

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) secured a second funding award from the U. S. Department of Agriculture, allowing it to continue the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program through October. This funding ensures the retention of the current 10-person WIC team, which is vital for supporting families in need. Amid uncertainties linked to the federal government shutdown, DOH remains focused on meeting the nutritional needs of Washington residents.

The department plans to closely monitor developments and will update its Federal Government Shutdown website as necessary. This support underscores the critical role of federal funding in maintaining food benefits for vulnerable populations. The WIC program significantly contributes to addressing food insecurity among women and children statewide. In 2024, WIC served approximately 246,000 participants in Washington, demonstrating its importance in public health. Continued federal funding is essential for ensuring that these essential services remain available during times of crisis.
