Shoreline Critical Areas Code Update Draft regulations available for public comment
Shoreline has opened its draft critical areas code for public comment until October 16, 2025, focusing on environmental protections for streams, wetlands, and landslide hazard areas. The new regulations propose extending Riparian Management Zones (RMZs) to 200 feet from each side of a stream, a significant increase from the existing 45-150 feet range. This update aligns with recommendations from the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, which highlights the essential functions of RMZs in maintaining stream health and supporting local wildlife. The City has determined that these regulations will not adversely affect the environment, issuing a State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) determination of non-significance. Residents are encouraged to review the draft code and provide feedback to Planning Manager Elise Keim.
A public hearing will be held on November 6, 2025, allowing community members to voice their opinions. This initiative reflects the City's commitment to balancing environmental protection with private property rights. Engagement from the community is crucial to shaping the final regulations.
