Edmonds man who shot rideshare driver sentenced to nearly 20 years

Shoreline, WALocal News

Alex Matthew Waggoner, 23, was sentenced to 235 months for the murder of rideshare driver Abdikadir Gedi Shariif, who was shot eleven times in Edmonds on January 3, 2024. The incident occurred shortly after Shariif completed a drop-off, when he nearly struck Waggoner while making a left turn. Following the shooting, Shariif succumbed to his injuries at Harborview Medical Center. This case emphasizes the need for ongoing discussions about gun laws and public safety in Washington State. Many community members express concern about the distinction between responsible gun owners and those who engage in violent actions.

Advocates for gun rights argue that responsible concealed carry holders enhance community safety, while critics call for stricter regulations. The shooting incident is a stark reminder of the complexities involved in firearm legislation and its implications for public safety. As the state grapples with these issues, community leaders urge for a balanced approach to gun control that addresses both safety and individual rights.
