King County expands mobile crisis teams across the region to support youth facing mental health and substance use challenges

Shoreline, WALocal News

King County expanded its mobile crisis teams for youth, increasing the total from two to nine teams available 24/7. Operated by the YMCA, these teams respond to mental health and substance use emergencies, providing urgent support and resources. Executive Shannon Braddock emphasized the importance of accessible help for families in crisis, stating, “When a young person is struggling, families shouldn’t have to navigate a maze of systems. ” Last year, the existing teams helped over 1,200 youth and families, a figure expected to grow with the expansion. Kelly Rider, Director of the King County Department of Community & Human Services, noted that this expansion is a significant step towards a comprehensive crisis response.

King County has also increased mobile crisis teams for adults, now totaling 27 teams. The expansion aims to improve response times and community understanding, according to Donnie Goodman, Executive Director of Behavioral Health Services at YMCA. Anyone can reach the mobile crisis teams by calling or texting 988, available year-round regardless of insurance status.
