AGs prevent 184 million cut to AmeriCorps service programs
Washington secured over $21 million for AmeriCorps service programs following a lawsuit filed by Attorney General Nick Brown and a coalition of states. The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) agreed to release over $184 million nationwide, including $2. 4 million for Washington in fiscal year 2025. Brown emphasized the ruling's importance for communities depending on AmeriCorps volunteers for vital services like food distribution and senior assistance. The lawsuit contested OMB’s plans to eliminate nearly 90% of AmeriCorps' workforce and $400 million in programs.
In June, a court granted a preliminary injunction that reinstated many programs and prohibited further cuts without proper rulemaking. Despite this, OMB continued to withhold funds until this week, when it agreed to release all previously withheld AmeriCorps funds. The coalition's legal actions, which included an amended lawsuit and a motion for a preliminary injunction, proved effective in restoring funding. This relief ensures that service programs across the country will continue to address critical community needs.
