State issues 33,000 penalty to U.S. Postal Service for dangerous waste violations
The Washington Department of Ecology imposed a $33,000 fine on the U. S. Postal Service for inadequate management of dangerous waste at its Seattle Bulk Mail Center. Inspections in 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2024 revealed ongoing failures in identifying and safely storing hazardous materials. In 2022, the center reported having 9,195 pounds of dangerous waste, often stored in unlabeled containers, which heightened the risk of unsafe chemical reactions.
Christa Colouzis, regional manager for Ecology, stressed the critical need for businesses to comply with hazardous waste regulations to protect public health and the environment. The 2024 inspection highlighted specific violations, including delays in determining waste hazards and insufficient personnel training. USPS has since rectified the immediate issues but must decide within 30 days whether to pay the penalty or appeal the decision. This incident underscores the importance of stringent waste management practices in preventing environmental hazards. The case reflects a broader concern regarding hazardous waste management in government facilities.
