States warn that U.S. Dept. of Education puts student mental health at risk

Shoreline, WAGovernment

Eighteen state attorneys general, led by Washington's Nick Brown, are urging the U. S. Department of Education to avoid limiting mental health support in schools through proposed changes to grant programs. These changes could restrict the services that school psychologists provide and impose vague conditions on funding. Brown argued that the proposals would hinder counselors and social workers in their efforts to assist students, particularly those who are English learners or gender diverse.

The letter also addresses the department's earlier decision to discontinue previously awarded grants, which has led to ongoing legal action from Washington state. The changes could affect funding through 2026, which was established post-mass shootings in Parkland and Uvalde. The attorneys general represent a coalition from 18 states, highlighting the widespread concern over potential negative impacts on student mental health. These proposed adjustments may conflict with existing federal obligations, raising further legal and procedural issues. The letter was submitted to the department on Monday, marking a significant moment in the ongoing debate over mental health resources in education.
