Shoreline, WALocal News

Councilmembers Rod Dembowski and Girmay Zahilay initiated a gun buyback program that has successfully removed over 1,000 firearms from circulation. To honor National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, Seattle & King County, alongside the King County Sheriff's Office, will host a drive-thru gun buyback event on September 6 at Shoreline College. This event invites King County residents to surrender firearms anonymously, contributing to the reduction of firearms in the community. Participants will stay in their vehicles and receive instructions for firearm intake and gift card distribution. Gift cards range from $25 for antique or inoperable firearms to $300 for AR-15s and AK-47s, incentivizing participation.

The program targets the high incidence of firearm-related suicides and aims to provide individuals with time to reconsider their situations. Since its inception, the program has gained traction, showcasing community support for reducing gun violence. For more information, residents can contact the program via email.
