Lake Forest Park Council talks traffic safety (and more cameras)

Shoreline, WALocal News

The Lake Forest Park city council addressed traffic safety in a recent meeting, reviewing studies that recommended the installation of automated speed cameras and lowering speed limits on Bothell Way and Ballinger Way. Residents expressed concerns about the safety of the intersection at NE 178th Street and 40th Avenue NE, prompting plans for new crosswalks equipped with flashing beacons. Deputy Mayor Tracy Furutani praised the proposed changes, emphasizing their potential to slow down traffic and improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians. Mayor Tom French indicated that funds generated from traffic camera fines could be used to finance these improvements. Councilmember Jon Lebo advocated for a data-driven strategy to prioritize traffic safety projects, highlighting the importance of community input.

The council aims to implement these safety measures while addressing the increased workload from automated ticketing. Additionally, a study suggested reducing the speed limit on Ballinger Way near Lake Forest Park Elementary School to 25 mph. The city has formally petitioned for lower speed limits to enhance consistency along the Bothell Way corridor.
