Courier scams target older residents across the state including 46 in King county
King County prosecutors issued a warning about an alarming increase in courier scams that primarily target older residents. Since the start of 2024, 46 victims have reported losses totaling $7 million. Chief Deputy Patrick Hinds stated that scammers contact potential victims via text, email, or phone calls, convincing them to withdraw cash from their retirement or savings accounts. Victims are then instructed to hand the cash to a courier for safekeeping. The King County Prosecutor’s Office is focusing on raising awareness and educating the public to prevent further incidents.
This issue reflects a broader trend of financial exploitation against elderly individuals. Law enforcement encourages vigilance and urges families to discuss financial safety with their older relatives. Protecting vulnerable populations from such scams is crucial for community well-being.
