Easy access to free overdose-reversal medication saves lives
The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) launched the Naloxone Finder, an online tool aimed at helping residents locate free naloxone to reverse opioid overdoses. Preliminary data from 2024 reported over 3,100 overdose deaths in Washington, with opioids implicated in 79% of those fatalities. The Naloxone Finder, now available on the DOH website, builds on an earlier tool developed by the Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute in 2018. Naloxone, sold under the brand name NARCAN®, can quickly restore normal breathing in overdose cases, particularly those involving fentanyl. It can be administered by anyone without special training, making it accessible to all ages.
DOH advises individuals to consider purchasing naloxone at pharmacies, as free supplies are limited to those without other access. This initiative reflects ongoing efforts to tackle the opioid crisis through public education and overdose prevention campaigns. Tao Sheng Kwan-Gett, State Health Officer, emphasized the importance of the Naloxone Finder for people who use opioids and their loved ones.
