Fircrest Urban Forest
Eighteen public trees were cut down along 15th Ave NE to facilitate the construction of a new skilled nursing facility. The Department of Social and Health Services received a permit allowing the removal of an additional 175 trees for the project. Improvements along the road include funding for tree replacements and a dedicated path for pedestrians and cyclists, separated from vehicle traffic. The Hearing Examiner's decision mandates that 80% of the trees on the Fircrest campus be retained, ensuring the preservation of the urban forest. There are approximately 2,444 trees on the campus, with no removals permitted in the historic Chapel area unless trees are hazardous.
Shoreline Planning Manager Elise Keim provided insights on the tree removal process, emphasizing the balance between development and environmental sustainability. The project reflects a commitment to maintaining community green spaces while accommodating necessary infrastructure. Fircrest aims to demonstrate how trees and development can coexist harmoniously.
