Shoreline blocks removal of the Firlands Way giant sequoia again

Shoreline, WALocal News

Shoreline city council renewed an emergency ordinance blocking the removal of a giant sequoia on Firlands Way for another six months, despite opposition from the property owner. The ordinance protects trees with a diameter greater than sixty inches, specifically targeting the sequoia, which measures 72. 8 inches in diameter. Councilmember Annette Ademasu highlighted the importance of protecting such rare elder trees in the city. Property owner Robert McCaughan noted that the tree was required to be part of the landscaping when the bank was built in 1978, and the site has historical significance.

The tree has caused damage to the parking lot and stormwater system, complicating the property sale. Councilmember Keith Scully acknowledged the tree's central role in the community, advocating for its long-term protection. The city plans to revise its tree regulations following public hearings on the ordinance. These ongoing discussions reflect broader efforts to balance urban development with environmental preservation.
