Shoreline resident wins Best in Show for glass art

Shoreline, WALocal News

Shoreline resident wins Best in Show for "Sxwole Anchor," a glass artwork that symbolizes stability amid cultural upheaval. The piece addresses the historical displacement faced by the Coast Salish people over the last 200 years. "Historically, an Anchor holds a ship steadfast against the currents," the artist notes, emphasizing its significance in grounding oneself. This artwork is included in the IN THE SPIRIT Contemporary Native Arts exhibit at the Washington State History Museum. The exhibit, which runs through September 14, 2025, highlights the intersection of two cultures and its effects on the Salish Sea community.

"Sxwole Anchor" is crafted from blown glass and cedar bark rope, measuring 16 inches by 10 inches. The piece invites reflection on the enduring strength of Native identity in turbulent times. Visitors can explore this and other contemporary Native artworks throughout the exhibit's duration.
