Boats fly through the air in the south Sound

Shoreline, WALocal News

A recent project saw helicopters transporting 14 derelict boats from the Squaxin Island shoreline as part of an innovative removal initiative. Supported by a grant from the NOAA Marine Debris Program, the Department of Natural Resources partnered with the Squaxin Island Tribe and the Port of Olympia to tackle the issue of abandoned vessels, which threaten marine ecosystems. The boats, either washed ashore or abandoned, posed significant risks to local wildlife. In addition, Chinook helicopters were used to install log jams in the Pilchuk River, aiding the recovery of threatened salmon species. This ecological restoration work utilized salvaged timber from DNR, showcasing a cost-effective and collaborative approach to environmental protection.

These projects highlight the importance of government partnerships in addressing ecological challenges. The Derelict Vessel Removal Program continues to be essential for maintaining the health of Puget Sound. Efforts like these not only remove hazards but also contribute to the recovery of critical habitats.
