Shoreline, WALocal News

A larger-than-life mural of Octavia Butler has been unveiled at the Commons in Lake Forest Park Town Center. This artwork honors the renowned author and climate advocate, who had a street named after her in the city. Butler's literary legacy continues through her novel "The Parable of the Sower," which serves as the 2024 Seattle Reads selection, portraying a dystopian future shaped by climate change. The mural, designed by Stephen Crowe and painted by Katie Todaro, aims to welcome visitors to Third Place Books. Butler won numerous awards, including the MacArthur Fellowship, the first given to a science fiction writer.

A new biography titled "Octavia Butler Positive Obsession: The Life and Times of Octavia E. Butler" by Susana M. Morris will be published in summer 2025. Morris will hold a discussion about the biography at Third Place Books on July 16, 2025. Butler's impact remains evident, with her books still in stock after two decades.
