Something's Up at the Ching

Shoreline, WALocal News

The Diggin' Shoreline team encountered new obstacles at the Ching Garden after a 5-1/2 month demolition wait. The site, once home to a house, now consists of a slope of fill dirt, damaged driveways, and rampant blackberries. To motivate volunteers on May 31, they opted to plant leftover winter squash and pumpkin starts instead of focusing on maintenance tasks. Despite initial skepticism regarding the soil's viability, ten volunteers planted a variety of pumpkins and winter squash. The plants now thrive, providing erosion control and weed suppression benefits.

The team anticipates a successful harvest celebration in October if the plants continue to grow well. Weekly volunteer work parties are scheduled every Saturday from 10 AM to Noon to further engage the community. The initiative not only fosters community spirit but also enhances the local environment.
