Solving Dignity Villages energy needs with ingenuity and collaboration
Dignity Village in Portland has upgraded its energy infrastructure, addressing a critical electricity shortage for its 43 households through a new solar panel system. Supported by the Portland Clean Energy Community Benefits Fund and nonprofits Verde and Twende Solar, the initiative culminated in summer 2023 with the installation of solar panels on 32 buildings. Residents Lisa Larson and Scott Layman, who have lived in the village for 14 years, played key roles in advocating for renewable energy solutions. Previously, villagers relied on unsafe alternatives like gas generators and candles, posing health and safety risks. The project mobilized 80 volunteers and established a shared 60-kilowatt solar system, significantly enhancing the community's living conditions.
This effort aligns with PCEF’s goal of empowering vulnerable communities in the face of climate change. The successful implementation of this project marks a shift in energy access for the village, improving safety and health for residents over the next two decades. Villagers celebrated the completion with a cookout to thank the volunteers for their support.
