Circling Back to Help the Community
Portland's Community Health Assess and Treat (CHAT) program addresses the increasing volume of non-emergency 911 calls, enabling paramedics to focus on critical situations. Paramedic Kyle LaClair recounted a poignant call from a man who, after being discharged from the hospital, sought help accessing his prescription. CHAT responders are trained to handle urgent medical issues without transporting individuals to hospitals, which allows them to dedicate more time to each case. LaClair shared that the program has successfully transitioned individuals from homelessness to stable housing and assisted others in overcoming challenging living situations. The aftercare team provides follow-up support, ensuring continuity in care and resources.
LaClair explained that many callers are unaware of alternative options and often just require access to medications. By developing trust with the community, CHAT improves the lives of those it serves, especially amid ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic. The program exemplifies a shift in emergency response that prioritizes holistic care over traditional emergency services.
