Two hikers rescued in Badlands Wilderness Area after running out of supplies

Two hikers were rescued in the Badlands Wilderness Area, east of Bend, Oregon, after they became lost and ran out of supplies. The hikers contacted authorities around 4:30 p. m. on August 10, stating they were four miles from the trailhead and one was experiencing a medical issue. Deputy Josh Westfall was the first responder, providing food and water, and was soon joined by 12 Search & Rescue volunteers who brought additional supplies.

After assistance, the hikers declined further medical treatment and chose to leave the area independently. The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office emphasized the importance of outdoor safety and encouraged hikers to plan accordingly during summer outings. Essential precautions include carrying extra food and water, wearing appropriate footwear, and informing someone of their plans. Proper preparation can significantly reduce the risk of dangerous emergencies in outdoor settings.
