Sewage Advisory Crews Respond to Sewage Release in South Portland

Portland, ORLocal News

On October 16, city crews in South Portland responded to a sewage release attributed to tree roots clogging the sewer system. The incident occurred on S Kelly Avenue and prompted an advisory for the public to follow posted signage. Crews worked to vactor the catch basins and successfully stopped the sewage flow. Environmental Services warned that most sewage releases are preventable and cited improper disposal of household waste as a common cause. Residents should only flush human waste and toilet paper, while grease should be disposed of in the trash to prevent clogs.

Additionally, nothing should be put down storm drains except rainfall. The City urges anyone witnessing a sewer overflow to call their hotline. This incident highlights the need for public awareness regarding proper waste disposal to protect the environment and public health.
