Multnomah County Declares Heat Emergency as Temperatures Climb
Multnomah County declared a heat emergency on August 11 as temperatures in Portland could soar to 100 degrees. In response, the county will open three cooling centers at noon for residents needing relief from the extreme heat. These centers, located at Gateway Church, Congregation Beth Israel, and Portland Covenant Church, will provide food, water, and a welcoming environment for pets. TriMet announced it will waive fares for anyone traveling to these shelters between 11 am and 10 pm. Health officials highlight that extreme heat poses serious risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as pregnant individuals and those with chronic health issues.
The county has also opened four library branches to provide additional cooling spaces. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated and find relief from the heat, as overnight lows will only drop to the high 60s. The county has yet to determine if cooling centers will remain operational on Tuesday.
