Oakland, CALocal News

Flora & Ferment, an Albany bottle shop specializing in ciders, has closed without prior notice, ending its unique offerings and community events. Friends & Family, an iconic queer bar in Oakland, will close its doors on December 30 after reporting a "devastatingly slow" summer alongside broader economic challenges. Known for its award-winning food and vibrant events, the bar was recently nominated for Best Bar in the East Bay for 2025 by Nosh readers. Owner Blake Cole plans to continue hosting private events until the lease is sold, while she and chef Gaby Maeda hope to launch a new concept in the future. The closure of these establishments highlights the ongoing economic difficulties faced by local businesses in the East Bay.

Flora & Ferment was located at 1122 Solano Ave. , while Friends & Family operated at 468 25th St. Both venues contributed significantly to their respective communities, fostering connections and celebrating local culture. With their closures, the East Bay loses key spaces that supported diverse communities and unique culinary experiences.
