Shelter for survivors of violence and trafficking opens at old Lake Merritt Lodge
The nonprofit Restorative Pathways has purchased the historic Lake Merritt Lodge to establish Solara House, a 120-person shelter for survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. This facility will primarily serve parents with children, single adults, and youth aged 18 to 24, providing crucial support services. Executive Director Sophora Acheson noted that the new management structure aims to prevent confusion and animosity that plagued past operations. The shelter will include a trauma recovery center, staffed by psychiatrists, nurses, and therapists, along with addiction treatment services. A total of 36 staff members will be present at all times, ensuring safety through restricted access and daily room checks.
Acheson highlighted the importance of a sober environment, stating that recovery efforts cannot coexist with active substance use. The organization faces funding challenges due to national and state politics and Oakland's budget issues, raising concerns about sustaining the facility. Solara House aims to provide a safe, supportive environment for residents seeking to reintegrate into the community.
