With majority of cases linked to drug addiction, MPD offers path to recovery

Marysville, WALocal News

The Marysville Police Department is taking a dual approach to crime prevention by addressing drug addiction through its Embedded Social Worker Program, which has served nearly 3,000 individuals since its inception in 2018. Leah Ann Warner, arrested for burglary, acknowledged that her drug use led to her criminal actions and has since sought help. Detective Sergeant Wallace Forslof emphasized that a significant portion of property crimes is tied to addiction, which necessitates a compassionate response from law enforcement. The program aims to provide resources for recovery, helping clients navigate social services and secure housing and employment. Warner's case illustrates the potential for rehabilitation, as she looks forward to regaining custody of her children.

The program's results include 192 individuals securing housing and 93 graduating from treatment in 2021 alone. By fostering connections between offenders and support systems, the department hopes to disrupt the cycle of crime and addiction. Warner's story serves as a testament to the power of second chances and community support.
