MPD Officer works to end animal suffering with new training program

Marysville, WALocal News

The Marysville Police Department's new Animal Cruelty Investigation Training program has trained over 460 officers from nearly 70 agencies since September. Officer Dave Vasconi emphasized the program's goal of rescuing animals from abusive circumstances and ensuring they receive medical care. “They can’t speak for themselves. They rely on us for the basic necessities of life,” he stated, reflecting his dedication to animal welfare. The training curriculum, developed in partnership with Pasado’s Safe Haven and the Criminal Justice Training Commission, aims to enhance accountability for those who harm animals.

As a result, there has been an increase in both animal rescues and successful prosecutions of offenders. Marysville’s Community Service Unit, which focuses on crimes against animals, plays a crucial role in this initiative. Residents are urged to report any instances of animal cruelty by calling 911. The program signifies a significant step towards fostering a safer environment for animals in the community.
