MPD Officer works to end animal suffering with new training program

Marysville, WALocal News

The Marysville Police Department's new Animal Cruelty Investigation Training program aims to combat animal abuse and has gained traction with nearly 70 agencies participating. Developed by Officer Dave Vasconi and Pasado's Safe Haven, the training educates officers on effectively rescuing abused animals and prosecuting offenders. Since its September launch, it has trained over 460 officers, reflecting a growing commitment to animal welfare. Vasconi emphasized the need for advocacy, stating, “They can’t speak for themselves. They rely on us for the basic necessities of life.

” The Community Service Unit, which includes a reserve officer specializing in animal crimes, plays a crucial role in responding to cruelty complaints. Each year, the unit often leads to arrests and animal rescues. The program's success demonstrates a shift in local law enforcement's approach to animal protection. Community members are encouraged to report suspected cruelty by calling 911 immediately.
