Marysville Police Department urges back-to-school traffic safety
The Marysville Police Department is ramping up efforts to ensure traffic safety as the school year approaches. Last year, officers issued 553 speeding citations in school zones, with many violations involving drivers traveling over 15 mph above the posted limit. In addition, police recorded 506 violations related to school bus stop paddles, indicating a troubling trend of drivers neglecting to stop for buses. Officers will increase patrols in school zones and near school buses to enforce safety laws, where fines for violations can reach $214. The department also urges drivers to remain vigilant when children are present and to obey flashing warning signs.
Washington law requires drivers to stop for buses with extended stop paddles and flashing red lights, unless a physical barrier separates the lanes. The police's proactive measures aim to promote safe practices as students return to school. By raising awareness, they hope to reduce traffic violations and enhance safety for all road users.
