Police urge back-to-school traffic safety

Marysville, WALocal News

The Marysville Police Department is ramping up efforts to ensure traffic safety as students return to school. Last year, officers issued 553 citations for speeding in school zones, with many drivers traveling significantly over the posted 20 mph limit. In addition to speeding, police recorded 14 citations for other school zone violations, including failure to yield and reckless driving. A staggering 506 violations involved drivers neglecting to stop for school buses with extended stop paddles, despite state laws requiring all lanes to halt unless physically separated. To enhance safety, officers from the traffic and school resource units will increase patrols in these critical areas.

The minimum fine for school zone violations stands at $214, reflecting the seriousness of these offenses. Police aim to foster a safer environment for students walking to school and drivers commuting in the area. With school zone lights flashing, the community is reminded to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic regulations.
