Lyon Creek fish barrier removal project along SR 104 begins June 30 in Lake Forest Park

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Starting June 30, construction will begin on a fish barrier removal project along Lyon Creek in Lake Forest Park. The Washington State Department of Transportation plans to replace an existing culvert with a new 24-foot-wide concrete structure, opening 7. 5 miles of upstream habitat for several fish species, including Chinook and coho salmon. Crews will work up to seven days a week, primarily conducting traffic control from 9 p. m.

to 5 a. m. Extended closures will affect SR 104/Ballinger Way and other local streets, with specific detours for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. Local access will be permitted, but crossing through work zones will not be allowed. The project, led by Johansen Construction Co.

, carries a price tag of $8. 71 million and is expected to finish this fall, depending on weather conditions. This initiative aligns with a U. S. District Court ruling mandating the removal of barriers to fish passage beneath state highways.

Improved habitat within Lyon Creek is crucial for preserving local fish populations and enhancing biodiversity.
