Commentary When the community leads, the arts thrive. Save the arts in the Edmonds School District

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Edmonds School District's music education is in jeopardy due to ongoing budget cuts, which threaten eleven classes across middle and high schools. In response, the Foundation for Edmonds School District initiated the Save the Arts campaign, targeting a fundraising goal of $434,000 by June 30, 2025. If successful, this funding will help maintain essential programs like choir and jazz band, which serve hundreds of students. The Northwest and Northeast quadrants, which have high participation in free meal programs, will be particularly affected, widening existing inequities. Last year, community members raised emergency funds that restored music classes at seven schools, demonstrating the power of local support.

The Mountlake Terrace High School Jazz Band achieved recognition by participating in the Essentially Ellington competition, showcasing the benefits of music education. The Foundation encourages the community to donate, volunteer, and advocate for arts education to ensure all children have access to a well-rounded education. Together, they can make a difference in preserving these vital music programs.
