Teen Talk Creating safe spaces for LGBTQ students

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The 2023 Washington State Healthy Youth Survey indicates that 29% of 10th graders in Snohomish County have experienced significant hopelessness, affecting their everyday activities. LGBTQ+ students are disproportionately affected, with nearly half reporting feelings of hopelessness. The concept of hope is vital, as it is defined as the belief that the future can be better than the past. Youth who report feelings of hopelessness are more likely to engage in high-risk behaviors and face serious mental health challenges, including suicidal ideation. To combat this, local high schools have implemented student-led clubs that support LGBTQ+ students and foster inclusivity.

The Mountlake Terrace High School Gender and Sexuality Alliance exemplifies such efforts, demonstrating that supportive environments can significantly enhance LGBTQ+ students' sense of safety and belonging. Individual stories, like that of JJ, a gay high school junior, highlight the importance of community support in navigating feelings of hopelessness. By creating safe spaces and fostering acceptance, the community can help cultivate hope among its youth.
