County Council Corner Reflecting on the importance of Memorial Day

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Memorial Day, established by Congress through the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1971, has its origins in the 1860s as Decoration Day, honoring fallen soldiers. The holiday gained the name "Memorial Day" after World War II and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom. Communities across the nation participate in ceremonies, reflecting on the bravery of those who defended ideals such as liberty and democracy. In Snohomish County, a memorial along the Centennial Trail honors 18 local veterans who died in the Global War on Terror, unveiled in 2022. The memorial features eighteen bronze doves, symbolizing each fallen hero.

Local Gold Star families, the Snohomish County Arts Commission, and the Parks Division collaborated to create this tribute. Memorial Day not only marks the unofficial start of summer but also calls for moments of quiet reflection. Residents are encouraged to honor the sacrifices of service members and strive to live lives worthy of the freedoms secured through their bravery.
