Three MTHS jazz musicians honored during Essentially Ellington Festival

Three talented musicians from Mountlake Terrace High School's Jazz Ensemble 1 were honored at the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Festival in New York. Freshman Sophie Ionitsa received an outstanding pianist award, while senior Justin Ho won an outstanding guitarist award and senior Bennett Harvey earned an honorable mention as a trombonist. The awards were presented by renowned jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, adding significance to the recognition. Band Director Darin Faul expressed pride in the students, emphasizing that their achievements reflect their hard work and dedication. While not all band members received individual awards, Faul acknowledged the collective effort and strong performance of the group.

Essentially Ellington is a prestigious competition that highlights the best high school jazz bands nationwide. The festival serves as an important platform for fostering young musicians' talents and passion for jazz. Faul's comments reinforce the school's dedication to nurturing musical talent within the community.
