Annual Discover Pass cost set to increase in October

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Discover Pass fee will rise from $30 to $45 starting October 1, 2025, following legislative approval and the signature of Gov. Bob Ferguson. This increase is the first since the pass was introduced in 2011, despite ongoing inflation. The Discover Pass is essential for funding the operation and maintenance of Washington's state parks, yet the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission expects limited new revenue from this increase. As part of managing a budget shortfall, the Legislature has cut general fund appropriations and imposed additional costs, resulting in a projected 71% funding reliance on earned revenue for the 2025-27 biennium.

The bill also introduces changes affecting off-road vehicle requirements and the Lifetime Disabled Veteran's pass. Revenue from the Discover Pass and related fees is vital for maintaining park services and staffing. State Parks will provide ongoing updates about these changes to customers over the summer and early fall. This increase reflects the state's efforts to sustain its park systems amid financial challenges.
