May is Mental Health Awareness Month Homage has resources for older adults
May serves as Mental Health Awareness Month, emphasizing the mental health challenges faced by older adults. Statistics reveal that one in five adults aged 55 and older experiences mental health issues, with depression being the most prevalent. Alarmingly, only 3% of older adults receive treatment from mental health professionals despite their significant need. Homage Senior Services, committed to supporting over 25,000 seniors in Snohomish County each year, offers free mental health resources tailored for those aged 60 and above. Their services include peer support from trained volunteers, geriatric depression screenings, and hands-on workshops aimed at fostering conversations and reducing stigma.
Upcoming workshops will cover topics like self-care and managing isolation. Nancy Brosemer, Homage's Mental Health Programs Manager, emphasizes the importance of giving older adults space to express their emotions. These initiatives not only aim to improve mental health but also to enhance the overall quality of life for seniors in the community.
