Lynnwood judge appoints Robert K. Grant as first municipal court commissioner

The City of Lynnwood appointed Robert K. Grant as its inaugural Municipal Court Commissioner, addressing a significant increase in court caseloads. His appointment follows a private swearing-in ceremony led by retired Judge Kenneth Cowsert. Presiding Judge Valerie Bouffiou praised Grant's qualifications, emphasizing his dual expertise in addiction medicine and criminal law. Grant's legal career includes roles as a deputy prosecutor and assistant attorney general, where he managed serious felony cases.

He has served as a judge pro tempore since 2016 across multiple courts in the region. In 2024, Lynnwood Municipal Court faced a staggering 66,939 cases, with over 18,000 hearings conducted. The new commissioner will manage a variety of court matters and be available 24/7 for urgent law enforcement requests. Councilmembers are set to formally meet Grant in a public work session on May 19.
