Will the Edmonds New Start center open its doors before winter?
The Edmonds New Start Center remains in the permitting phase, while the Everett facility has received its necessary approvals. Both centers aim to provide emergency housing and essential support services for individuals experiencing homelessness, backed by a total budget of about $37 million from federal and county funding sources. Kara Main-Hester, Snohomish County’s chief recovery and resilience officer, highlighted the importance of opening before winter to assist vulnerable populations. The Edmonds project faces delays due to city code requirements mandating electric vehicle (EV) and e-bike parking, which officials argue may be underutilized. County staff noted that the financial implications of these requirements could add approximately $60,000 to the project costs.
Each room in the New Start centers will include basic furnishings and appliances to ensure a comfortable living environment for residents. Local communications staff pointed out that the permitting process can be complicated, particularly for significant renovations. The Everett facility’s progress indicates a positive step forward for addressing homelessness in the region.
