Borrow a life jacket for free at Martha Lake and Lake Ballinger

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Life jacket loaner stations open on May 23 at Martha Lake County Park and Lake Ballinger Waterfront Park, providing free access to life jackets for children and adults. Shawneri Guzman, outreach manager for South County Fire, states the initiative aims to enhance water safety awareness and reduce drowning incidents. The program is a collaborative effort between Safe Kids Snohomish County, Snohomish County Parks, and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, with stations available through Labor Day. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own properly fitted jackets, as the honor system governs usage and availability is not assured. Guzman warns that drowning can happen in seconds, often when children are unsupervised, and stresses the importance of adult supervision.

Parents should avoid distractions, stay within reach of young children, and remain vigilant even if their kids are strong swimmers. Current cold water temperatures increase the risk, making cautious behavior even more critical. In emergencies, calling 911 immediately is vital for safety.
