Prep baseball Warriors fall to Stanwood in walk-off District tourney win

The Stanwood Spartans triumphed over the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors 2-1, clinching a spot in the 3A state baseball tournament during a nail-biting District 1 semifinal at Funko Field. Gavin Gehrman’s game-winning double in the bottom of the seventh inning scored teammate Shawn Porter, sealing the victory. Both teams exhibited strong pitching, with E-W Coach Dan Somoza emphasizing the game’s pivotal moments. The Warriors tied the game in the top of the seventh, as Lukas Wanke’s single allowed Luke Boland to score. Despite only achieving two hits, Stanwood capitalized on walks and strategic plays.

The Spartans' victory marks a significant achievement, given their status as the no. 2 seed in the district tournament. E-W, now facing Shorewood in a crucial third-place playoff on Saturday, aims to rebound from this heart-wrenching loss. This matchup will determine their fate for a spot in the state tournament.
