Girls Who Code club at Mountlake Terrace HS builds confidence in prospective STEM students
The Girls Who Code club at Mountlake Terrace High School has gained popularity, attracting over 30 students each week, as it encourages collaboration in coding. Founded by Katarina Moye and co-run by Jenna Oh, the club aims to combat the gender imbalance in computer science classes. Participants can choose their projects, from game development to cybersecurity challenges, fostering a sense of ownership in their learning. Moye emphasizes the club's focus on personal interests, differing from the structured nature of formal classes. Despite a slow start with only two attendees at its inaugural meeting, the club has flourished.
Both founders are now seniors planning to major in computer sciences at university, showcasing the club's influence on their aspirations. The initiative aligns with a broader national movement to encourage girls in STEM fields. The club not only builds coding skills but also fosters a supportive community for aspiring tech students.
